iPhone App – Dragon Dictation

// March 10th, 2010 // No Comments » // Apps

If you are like me you text way more than you make calls. Last month alone I send over two thousand (2,000) text messages using my iPhone! That’s a lot of typing on my little iPhone keyboard. The new app from Dragon Dictation would have saved me much needed time. Check out the preview images from this app and download it for free via iTunes.

Apple has plenty of buzz surrounding their new hybrid device – the iPad – which was unveiled last month. The tablet is expected to devastate Amazon Kindle sales (and hard copy book sales) with its own apps store, bookstore and gaming capabilities. So what is this coveted iPad really worth? The guys over at iSuppli tore down the device and priced it out based on materials and manufacturing costs. Apple is selling the new device for  $499 but what does it cost Apple to manufacture? Check out the breakdown after the jump…you’ll be surprised.

Stack of Mac

As a Graphic Designer people tend to ask me about computers…Apple or PC, Dell or HP…you get the idea. So instead of repeating myself over and over I’m going to spend 15 minutes and explain why I prefer and recommend Apple computers over the competition. Before you can just pick a computer from some prison-like line up at Bestbuy or Frys you have to understand the end use, meaning…what is the computer primarily going to be used for? Ask yourself the following questions?

Apple’s Magic Mouse

// October 21st, 2009 // No Comments » // Blog, Gear, Tech

The Apple store was down yesterday morning which means only one thing…new products. Apple unveiled its new Magic Mouse set to replace the current Apple Mighty Mouse. New Features of this Apple classic include: laser tracking, multi-touch surface, on/off switch and better blue tooth connectivity strength (33 ft). Here is part of the Gizmodo hands-on review.

Is this the best mouse Apple has ever made? Yeah, it is. The Magic Mouse is much better than the Mighty Mouse, which people hated, and might actually be good enough that non-Mac users might want to pick it up as well, supposing that they don’t really care about ergonomics. Since it fills the gap between a tiny travel mouse and a full sized desktop mouse, the Magic is in a good position to grab users on both ends.

Hands On: Apple iPod Nano with Video

// September 11th, 2009 // 1 Comment » // Blog, Gear, Hands On, Tech

Today I got my hands on a the latest from Apple, a new iPod Nano with Video (Apple iPod Nano 8GB w/video Orange - $149). The new line of pods are manufactured in 9 bright semi-metallic colors and come in both 8GB ($149) and 16GB ($179) models. The main point of this thread it to talk about the iPod nano’s new features, I will assume that you generally know what iPods can do and the basic functionality of these devices, with that said I will just cover the new features… lets get going.

Record Video

Yes, that’s right you can record video from your new iPod nano. The camera records at H.264 VGA video, 640 by 480 pixels, up to 30 frames per second with AAC audio. That means that you are not recording in HD (far from it) but its high enough quality so that you can record that new video of your little brother putting kitten mittens on your moms cat and post it directly onto YouTube. You should also note that there are 15 different live effects so that you can get your James Cameron on. The real time effects include (Sepia, Black and White, X-Ray, Film Grain, Thermal, Security Cam, Cyborg, Bulge, Kaleido, Motion Blur, Mirror, Light Tunnel, Dent, Stretch, and Twirl).

FM Radio w/ Live Pause

FM Radio is now live on your iPod, not only can you listen to your favorite radio stations (yes, there are still static problems, its not HD Radio) but you can even pause a station and tag your favorite songs. Reconnect your iPod to your PC or Mac and iTunes 9 will identify those songs you tagged from your iPod radio and allow you to purchase them from the iTunes Store.

VoiceOver

Can’t remember what song you are listening to? Well ask your iPod. This feature (released first on the iPhone) is now available on the new line of iPods. Clicking the center wheel and VoiceOver will tell you the artist and song title of the track you are listening to, without interrupting your music. Note: the Radio receiver is in the headphones so you cannot listen to the radio when they are detached.

Overall Impression

There is not much to complain about this new 5th Generation iPod Nano, the build is solid and complete the user interface is smooth and customizable and the video camera is, well, its there. I would not buy this just for the video camera alone, (please don’t plan on recording any full length feature films on this device, I’m amazed that they could even get this into such a compact product!) but if you need or want an iPod this should knock your socks off. If you have any comments please post them below, I’d love to hear them! [My thanks to Greg for his help with this post!]

Apple Tablet Rumors

// August 28th, 2009 // No Comments » // Blog, Tech

It has long been rumored by Gizmodo that the “Apple tablet”, “Macbook touch” or “Mactouch”would be released sometime this September or October. As an Apple Fanatic and Graphic Designer I can only hope that these rumors turn out to be true. The Mactouch would be an ideal platform for a graphic designer to operate from, its lightweight style and design allow for easy portability and creating/editing directly on the surface of the tablet would enable direct interaction with a project and eliminate the need for a Wacom Tablet (drawing pad + pen). It has also been rumored that Apple will create 13″ and 15″ versions of the tablet for under $1000, this brings up questions about speed, performance and battery life but we can deal with those issues once they arise.
